Description

A framed landscape painting on paper, identified by a gallery label on the reverse as a design for a lithograph. The work depicts a stylized rural scene with rolling hills, farm buildings, and silhouetted cow parsley plants under a textured, stippled sky. The medium appears to be gouache or mixed media. The lower right corner is signed in black paint ‘slater ’70’.

The reverse of the frame features a cream adhesive label with a red printed header reading IAN McVITIE WESTON, DEALER IN CONTEMPORARY ART. The label contains handwritten entries in black ink: ARTIST RICHARD SLATER, TITLE Landscape: Design for Lithograph, and DATE 1970. The painting is housed in a gilt-finished wooden frame with a cream-coloured mat.

Frame size 68 x 53.5 cm.

Condition report:

The gilt finish on the wooden frame shows scattered losses and chips to the edges on all four sides (photo 1). The cream matting displays several small spots of foxing or surface discolouration (photo 1). The reverse paper backing is torn and lifting at the top edge (photo 4). The painting itself appears to be in good condition with no visible tears or fading.
