Lot 4:
Description
A group of Second World War military and civilian service awards. The military awards, consist of a 1939-1945 Star, a France and Germany Star, and a 1939-1945 War Medal in cupro-nickel. As is standard for UK issues, these medals are unnamed. The military awards are accompanied by an original Air Council condolence slip bearing the recipient’s typed name, stating the awards were granted in respect of service by one who did not live to receive them. The civilian awards in the group, likely belonging to the recipient’s widow, include a Women’s Voluntary Service (WVS) Long Service Medal featuring the WVS monogram within an ivy wreath, housed in a green Royal Mint presentation case with a velvet-lined interior. Additionally, the group includes a silver-toned WVS Civil Defence lapel badge with a crown terminal and a gold-toned octagonal Scout or Guide Thanks Badge featuring a central fleur-de-lis. These two badges are contained within a red velvet-lined jeweller’s box.
Condition report:
The campaign stars and War Medal are in good condition with original ribbons showing light age-related wear. The WVS Long Service Medal is in excellent condition within its presentation case. The Air Council condolence slip shows standard vertical and horizontal fold lines from original mailing. The original O.H.M.S. mailing box remains intact but shows crushing and surface wear consistent with age. Both the WVS presentation case and the red badge box are in good condition.
