Lot 143:
Description
A large-scale Chinese silk embroidery panel depicting a female character from traditional Chinese Opera. The central figure is a ‘Dan’ role, rendered with traditional white face makeup, stylized red eye shadow, and defined black eyeliner. The figure is depicted in mid-motion, holding long pheasant feathers or water sleeves that swirl around in an energetic composition. The piece is executed in silk thread on a silk or satin ground using various needlework techniques, including long and short stitch to achieve painterly transitions of colour. The palette comprises vibrant reds, yellows, blues, greens, and pinks. The background is fully embroidered with directional stitches in pale green and cream to create a shimmering effect. The panel is set within a decorative gold-toned inner frame featuring a repeating scroll-and-leaf motif, further mounted on a large neutral-toned paper matting.
Overall dimension including mount: 80 x 70cm.
Condition report:
The embroidery is well-preserved with high colour saturation and luster. A visible horizontal crease or tear is present on the far left edge of the outer paper mount, approximately halfway up (photo 1). Minor surface dust and small dark specks are visible on the neutral-toned matting. The inner gold-toned frame appears intact.
