Description

A Chinese archaistic tripod censer and cover, carved from translucent carnelian agate of deep reddish-orange tone with natural white banding and internal inclusions. The rectangular-form vessel features four zoomorphic legs decorated with incised scrollwork. The body is flanked by two handles carved as mythical beast heads, possibly elephant or dragon hybrids, each suspending a loose ring. The tiered cover is surmounted by a large finial in the form of a crouching Buddhist lion or qilin, detailed with a bifurcated tail and fur texture. An incised rectangular seal is present on the underside of the lid, containing two Chinese characters which are not clearly legible due to the translucency of the stone.

Height: 17 cm
Width: 11 cm.

Condition report:

The censer is structurally sound with no major repairs visible. There are small chips and abrasions along the inner rim of the body where the lid sits (photo 5). Significant white crusty residue is present in the recessed areas of the carving and along the interior rims (photos 5 and 6). The stone exhibits natural internal fissures and cloudy inclusions consistent with the material.
