Lot 128:
Description
A pair of large Japanese porcelain bowls. Each bowl is decorated in a traditional Imari palette comprising underglaze blue, iron-red enamel, and gilding. The interior composition features a central circular medallion depicting a flower-filled vase on a low stand. The internal walls are densely decorated with a scrolling floral and foliate ground, interspersed with two diamond-shaped reserves. Each reserve contains a figure in traditional robes set against a stylized cloud background. The rims are finished with a gilded edge and an internal border of parallel red lines. The exterior of each piece repeats the dense floral scrolling pattern with large blossoms and cloud motifs. The porcelain body is white with a slightly greyish-blue tint, and each bowl sits on a short, unglazed foot ring. Centred within the foot ring on the glazed base is a square red enamel mark within a double-square border. The mark contains four printed characters; the right column reads 有田 and the left column reads 焼, which transcribe to Arita Yaki.
Diameter 31cm
Height 14.5cm.
Condition report:
Both bowls are in good overall condition. There is minor rubbing and surface wear to the gilded rims (photo 1) and light surface wear to the internal enamels consistent with age. The foot rings show minor shelf wear and firing grit (photo 4). No chips, cracks, or restorations are visible in the provided images.
