Lot 54:
Description
A decorative thematic chess set comprising thirty-two cast metal figures and a polished stone board. The pieces are designed with ancient Greek and Roman motifs, featuring two contrasting finishes: one side in a verdigris and turquoise patina and the opposing side in a dark green and black patina. Both sides are finished with polished gold-toned highlights and circular bases. The figural representations include kings and queens as robed dignitaries, bishops as armed warriors, knights as soldiers on horseback, and pawns as infantrymen with shields. The rooks are fashioned as Corinthian-style architectural columns. The square board is constructed from polished stone tiles, alternating between translucent cream and blue-veined squares, surrounded by a wide white stone border and supported by small feet. No maker’s marks, signatures, or labels are visible on the pieces or the board.
Condition report:
The set is complete with all thirty-two pieces present. The cast metal figures exhibit an intentional antiqued finish with some minor scuffs and oxidation consistent with handling. The gold-toned bases show light surface scratches and tarnishing. The stone board retains a high polish, although a visible seam or hairline crack is present through the white border on the lower left side (photo 1). A small rectangular residue mark is visible on the right-hand border (photo 2).
