Lot 95:
Description
A set of six hand-coloured aquatints on paper after works by Henry Thomas Alken. The prints are from the series titled Sheldon’s National Sports: Hunting Qualifications. Each print features a central equestrian hunting scene with figures in traditional red coats. The lower left of each image field bears the printed text Drawn & Engraved by H. Alken. The lower centre of each sheet features a specific title: The Appointment., Getting Away., A Slap at a Park Fence., Getting Over., Slap at a Brook., and Creeping a Finish. The publication line at the bottom of each sheet reads London: Published by James Sheldon, 31, Ely Place. The prints are mounted behind glass in matching gilt wood frames with deep green-grey card mounts.
Condition report:
All prints exhibit significant and widespread foxing across the paper surface, most notably visible in the sky and margin areas (photos 2-7). There is pronounced toning and light staining to the paper of each work. The gilt frames show minor surface wear, small scuffs to the gilding, and an accumulation of dust (photo 1).
