Description
This lot comprises a trio of landscape paintings executed in oil on canvas, each housed in an ornate gilded wooden frame. The works are rendered in a traditional plein air style, focusing on the natural light and atmospheric conditions of the British countryside and coast. The first painting depicts a rural scene with a dirt track leading through fields towards a wooded area under a cloudy sky. The second work shows a river winding through a valley flanked by trees. The third painting portrays a coastal scene featuring prominent white chalk cliffs. Each work bears a painted signature in the lower corner reading LANCASTER. The coastal scene features a typed adhesive label on the verso reading CLIFFS NR SEAFORD. and the river scene has handwritten ink text on the upper reverse of the canvas reading 5734 49 Pad for ANN. The paintings are presented in matching gilt frames with ribbed and foliate detailing.
Condition report:
The paintings and frames show a visible accumulation of surface dust and dirt across all three items. The gilded frames exhibit multiple areas of minor chips, scuffs, and loss of gilding, particularly at the corners and outer edges (photo 1). The coastal scene shows yellowing and peeling adhesive tape on the reverse (photo 5). The canvases appear stable within their frames and show no signs of tearing or major repair, though there are minor surface abrasions consistent with age.
