Lot 81:
Description
A pair of framed ceramic tile murals, each composed of twelve square tiles depicting a European military officer on horseback. The first mural shows a figure in a red uniform with gold epaulettes and a bicorne-style hat, riding a cream-coloured horse. The second mural portrays an officer in a green and gold dolman with a fur-lined pelisse and a feathered shako, carrying a guidon whilst riding a chestnut horse. Both panels are hand-painted in a folk-art style with a glazed finish. The tiles are set into simple stained wooden frames. No maker’s marks or signatures are visible on the front surfaces.
Frame size 46 x 60 cm.
Condition report:
Both panels exhibit significant fine crazing throughout the glaze across all tiles (photos 1 and 2). Minor surface pitting is visible on several tiles, notably on the background of the red-uniformed officer (photo 1). The wooden frames show light surface wear and minor scuffs to the edges (photo 1 and 2). No chips or cracks to the ceramic bodies are visible.
