Description
A pair of Louis XVI style fauteuils featuring oval caned backrests and fluted legs. The frames are constructed from carved wood with a gold-coloured finish over a red bole base. The seats are upholstered in a cream and burgundy striped fabric with a piped edge. The arms feature padded rests upholstered in matching fabric, terminating in scroll-carved handrests. The backrests are inset with woven cane in a traditional pattern. The seat rails are carved with floral motifs at the knees and the legs are tapered with fluted detailing.
Condition report:
Widespread wear and loss to the surface finish is visible across both frames, particularly on the handrests (photo 1), the upper edges of the backrests (photo 4), and the legs, revealing the underlying red bole and bare wood. The woven cane backrests appear taut and free from breaks or sagging. The upholstery shows minor surface marks and light discolouration consistent with use, notably on the front edges of the seat cushions (photo 1). The frames appear structurally sound with no significant chips or losses to the carved elements.
