Lot 17:
Description
This lot comprises a wooden nine-drawer accent chest arranged in a three-by-three grid. The piece is constructed from hardwood, likely mango wood, with a medium-brown stained finish to the top and side panels showing prominent natural grain. The drawer fronts and frame facade are heavily ornamented with hand-painted polychrome decoration in a folk art style featuring raised embossed paintwork. The design is centred around a large circular motif spanning all nine drawers, containing a black and white checkerboard centre surrounded by scrolling floral vines and dense geometric dot patterns in red, white, blue, and green on a dark blue and cream ground. The drawers are of simple construction, utilizing butt joints secured with nails. Each drawer is fitted with a dark-finished iron ring pull mounted on a scalloped circular backplate.
Width 80cm
Depth 30.5cm
Height 80cm.
Condition report:
A significant splintered chip and loss of wood is present on the front bottom frame rail towards the centre-right (photo 7). The stained wooden top surface exhibits various surface scratches, minor scuffs, and pale water-spotting (photos 2 and 3). There are minor scuffs and small paint chips along the black-painted edges and corners of the frame (photo 1). The piece appears structurally sound with all drawers functioning.
