Description

This lot comprises a hand-knotted Persian Tabriz rug featuring a wool pile on a cotton foundation. The rectangular carpet displays a stepped diamond-shaped medallion in ivory and tan tones, set against a dark navy blue field densely populated with an all-over Herati or Mahi pattern of repeating floral motifs. The composition is framed by a series of borders, including a wide primary ivory-ground border with palmette and floral urn decorations, flanked by multiple narrow guard stripes in terracotta and tan. The colour palette primarily utilises navy blue, ivory, terracotta, and light tan, with small accents of sage green. The fringes consist of the exposed ends of the cotton warp threads. Based on a measurement against a yellow tape measure, the rug features a knot density of approximately 7 knots per linear centimetre, consistent with a 50-Raj quality. The tape measure bears printed technical markings reading M24 0122, UK CA, 8506, 053726, 20°C, and PR. APP’D NO. 339 TC. There are no maker marks or signatures visible on the reverse of the rug.

Approx. 125 x 200cm.

Condition report:

The rug appears to be in good overall condition with a full and even pile throughout (photo 1). There are no visible areas of low wear, moth damage, or staining to the field or borders (photo 2). The side selvedges are intact and the cotton fringes at both ends are well-preserved, showing consistent length without significant fraying or loss (photo 1).
