Description
This set comprises a polished stone chessboard and thirty-two hand-carved chess pieces. The board is constructed from alternating squares of white marble and multi-coloured banded onyx in shades of green, brown, and cream, enclosed within a bevelled white marble border. The chess pieces are carved in a simplified Staunton-inspired style. One side is fashioned from white marble or white onyx, and the opposing side is crafted from multi-coloured banded onyx, matching the darker squares of the board. The set is housed in two matching presentation cases. Each case features a dark green velvet-covered exterior with metal latches and a fitted interior lined with pleated bright green satin. One case holds the board securely, while the other features individual recessed compartments for each chess piece. No maker’s marks, labels, or signatures are visible on the pieces, board, or cases.
Condition report:
The set is complete and in very good overall condition. There are no visible chips, cracks, or significant abrasions to the stone board or the thirty-two chess pieces. The velvet-covered cases show minor shelf wear and light fading consistent with age, but remain structurally sound with functioning latches.
