Lot 6:
Description
This matching vanity set consists of a sterling silver-mounted hand mirror and hairbrush manufactured by the prominent firm Hukin and Heath. The design reflects the transition between the Arts and Crafts and early Art Deco movements, featuring engine-turned guilloche backgrounds adorned with applied stylized floral and geometric motifs. These motifs are inlaid with turquoise-coloured stone chips set into a dark ground, a decorative style similar to the Cymric range produced for Liberty and Co. The hand mirror is fitted with a bevelled glass plate, and the rectangular hairbrush contains natural bristles. The mirror handle is professionally engraved with the name Betty followed by the dedication From Mum on her 21st Birthday. The terminals of both handles are engraved with an elaborate interlaced monogram reading K.E.H. Hallmarks are struck on the side edges of both pieces, comprising the maker mark H & H for Hukin and Heath, the anchor for the Birmingham assay office, the lion passant indicating sterling silver purity, and the lowercase date letter l for the year 1910. The mirror neck is also stamped with a registration number appearing as 6879468.
Total approx. weight 313g.
Condition report:
The silver mounts exhibit a heavy dark patina and tarnish throughout. There are visible dents, ripples, and wear to the silver edges, most notably on the brush head and the frame of the mirror. The mirror glass shows significant foxing and deterioration of the silvering, manifesting as dark spots and clouding across the surface. The turquoise-coloured inlays appear largely intact, though some surface grime is present. The brush bristles are discoloured and show signs of age and use.
