Lot 138:
Description
This lot comprises a collection of assorted walking sticks and umbrellas presented in a vintage coopered oak barrel stand. The stand is constructed with dark-stained oak staves and five polished brass bands secured with rivets.
The collection includes a walking stick featuring a globular, embossed silver cap handle with foliate scrollwork on a polished reddish-brown wooden shaft. The silver collar bears a stamped mark for Harrison Brothers & Howson, consisting of the letters ‘H’, ‘B’, and ‘S’ in a rectangular cartouche, alongside punch marks for a lion passant, a leopard’s head, and a capital letter ‘C’ in a shield, hallmarked for London, 1898.
Also included is a rustic walking stick with a natural stag horn handle and a dark end cap on a tapered wooden shaft, a contemporary walking aid with a textured cork-effect ergonomic handle and black composite shaft with a wrist strap, and two umbrellas. The umbrellas consist of one example with a green canopy and light wooden handle, and a second with a navy blue canopy and a translucent amber-toned plastic handle.
Condition report:
The silver-topped walking stick shows significant damage to the collar, with a large section of the metal torn and secured with yellow adhesive residue (photo 2). The silver pommel exhibits several dents and surface tarnishing (photo 3). The stag horn handle shows natural staining and surface variations consistent with the material (photo 5). The wooden barrel stand exhibits scuffs, deep scratches, and finish loss to the oak staves (photo 6), while the brass bands show surface oxidation and minor denting (photo 1). The contemporary walking aid and umbrellas show light wear consistent with use.
