Description

A pair of heavy-duty wooden transit crates constructed from thick-cut pine or fir planks with vertical reinforcing battens. The rectangular chests feature hinged lids and thick natural fiber rope carry handles threaded through recessed wooden cleats at either end. The construction uses iron hardware including central metal hasps and staples for securing the lids. Each crate is built with robust corner joinery and horizontal plank sides. The interiors are empty and demonstrate the same utilitarian wooden construction as the exterior surfaces. Both crates are fitted with metal hinges to the rear of the lids and show remains of oxidized iron fasteners.

Condition report:

The wood shows a weathered patina with scattered surface abrasions and minor wood loss at the corners consistent with transit use (photos 1 and 2). There is oxidation present on all iron hardware including hinges and hasps (photos 3 and 5). The rope handles show fraying and wear to the natural fibers (photo 2 and 6). Minor staining and small wood splinters are visible within the interiors (photo 3 and 4).
