Lot 98:
Description
This lot comprises a large rectangular wall mirror featuring a multi-layered decorative frame. The frame is constructed from wood with composite molded elements, finished in a dual-tone aesthetic of distressed gold leaf and blackened silver. The design incorporates a wide outer border with a repeating geometric notched pattern. A central recessed section contains an intricate band of pierced high-relief scrolling floral motifs and a row of turned, spindle-like bobbin projections. This decorative band is finished in black with silvered highlights to the relief work. The innermost border features a gilded chevron pattern. The central mirror plate is clear and rectangular. The frame is designed in a revival style mimicking aged architectural elements.
120 x 90cm.
Condition report:
The frame shows significant distressing to the gilt finish. There is also wear and damage, including corners with losses to the outer gilded composition layer which exposes the white gesso substrate and underlying wood (photos 4, 6, and 7). The side profiles show extensive rubbing, flaking, and loss of the gold finish, revealing the white base layer (photo 5). The corner joins appear stable, though there is chipping to the decorative molding at the miter joints. Dust and particulate matter are present within the deep recesses of the bobbin and scrollwork carving. The mirror plate is clear with no significant foxing or silvering loss visible.
