Description

A set of four dining armchairs constructed from a medium-tone hardwood, likely ash or oak. The design features a continuous steam-bent curved backrest and armrest supported by an open Y-shaped back splat. The chairs are built with tapered legs joined by four stretchers, with the front legs terminating in rounded, protruding tenon-style caps at the junction of the seat frame. Each chair is fitted with a natural paper cord seat woven in a four-point envelope pattern. The timber displays a prominent grain throughout the back splats and frame components. No maker marks, labels, or stamps are visible on the frames or underside of the seats.

Condition report:

The set is in used condition with visible wear to the timber and upholstery. Significant finish loss and scuffing are present on the curved armrests of all chairs, particularly at the terminal ends where the wood is exposed (photos 1, 2, and 5). There are various small nicks, scratches, and white paint-like transfer marks on the legs and stretchers, notably on the front stretcher of the third chair (photo 4). The paper cord seats show heavy signs of age and use, including multiple areas of fraying and broken cords along the front and side edges (photos 3 and 5). Staining is visible across the seats, including a distinct green mark on the fourth chair (photo 5) and yellowish discolorations on the others. The tension of the woven cord appears loosened in several sections.
