Description
This lot comprises two floral still life oil paintings. The first is a vertical composition on canvas depicting a cluster of large white peonies held in a clear glass globular vase, executed with thick impasto brushwork against a dark olive and charcoal ground. The canvas is stretched over a wooden frame with corner wedges. The second is a horizontal composition on an artists’ board depicting white anemones with yellow centres in a dark blue ceramic jug.
Both works are housed in matching light-toned wooden frames with gilt and cream inner slips.
Condition report:
The peony painting shows visible pinholes and minor paint losses at the extreme edges of the canvas (photo 3). Both works exhibit surface grime and fine crazing to the paint layers consistent with age. The wooden frames show scattered scuffs, small losses to the gilt finish, and general wear to the corners (photo 1). The reverse of the canvas shows some spotting and discolouration (photo 4).
