Description
An abstract expressionist oil painting titled Empty Fairground by the Scottish artist Mardi Barrie (1930–2004). The composition features energetic impasto brushwork with a dominant sweep of magenta and plum tones in the upper half, contrasting with a structured lower section in muted green, ochre, and purple. This work is signed in the lower right as mardi. The verso features a handwritten inscription in black ink stating May 19th 1972, Empty Fairground, and Mardi Barrie.
Four labels are present on the reverse: a central printed white gallery label from Gallery Edward Harvane, 85 Bourne Street, Sloane Square, S.W.1, 01-730 4944, with typewritten details for Title: EMPTY FAIRGROUND (No. 31), Artist: MARDI BARRIE, Purchased by: MISS SHELAGH FRASER, and Date: MAY 19th, 1972; a blue-bordered adhesive label in the top right corner reading EMPTY FAIRGROUND, £34, and OIL ON CANVAS BOARD; a framer’s stamp on the right for Aitken Dott & Son, FINE ART DEALERS, 26 SO. CASTLE ST., EDINBURGH; and a small printed label in the bottom left containing the number 84-48. The work is housed in a wooden frame with a gilt inner slip.

Condition report:
The oil painting is in good overall condition with no visible losses or craquelure to the paint surface. The wooden frame exhibits minor scuffing and small chips to the outer edges (photo 1). The backing paper on the verso is aged with some tearing and lifting at the edges, and the securing tape is discoloured and peeling in several areas (photo 2).
