Description
This lot comprises an oil on board landscape painting by W M Moffett. The scene depicts a rural landscape with a small red-roofed building nestled among groups of trees, set under a textured sky of grey and cream tones. The work is executed using a heavy impasto impressionistic technique. The painting is signed in red paint at the lower right corner with the characters ‘W M Moffett’. The reverse of the frame features a handwritten paper label reading ‘On Ditchling Common / WM Moffett / 27 Winfield Ave / Brighton’. A stencilled mark reading ‘9 0 S Y M’ is present on the backing board. The painting is held in a gilt and distressed wood frame featuring a fabric-covered inner slip.
Frame size: 60 x 50 cm.
Condition report:
Several areas of paint loss and flaking are visible, primarily located in the upper left and central portions of the sky (photo 2). The frame shows general surface wear and rubbing (photo 1). The paper backing on the reverse is heavily torn (photo 4).
