Description
This lot comprises an antique oil on panel painting depicting a rural genre scene. The composition features a barefoot woman in a red shawl carrying a child on her back in the foreground, adjacent to a thatched cottage. To the right, a foraging pig is depicted beside a stone wall. A field worker with a rake is visible in the middle distance, set against an expansive landscape with a distant church spire under a pale sky. The work is presented in an ornate gilt composition frame with deep-cove moulding and scrolling foliate and floral motifs. The reverse is obscured by torn brown paper and multiple layers of adhesive tape.
Frame size 77.5 x 62.5 cm.
Condition report:
Widespread craquelure is visible across the entire paint surface (photo 2). There is noticeable paint flaking and several small losses, specifically around the figures in the lower-left foreground (photo 4). The frame is in poor condition, with large sections of the moulded ornament missing from the top and left edges (photo 1) and extensive cracking and loss to the gilt finish throughout (photo 5). The reverse exhibits torn paper and layers of old adhesive tape (photo 5).
