Description
A pair of ritxòkò (dolls) produced by the Karajá (Iny) people of the Araguaia River basin, Brazil. The anthropomorphic figures are hand-modelled from clay and decorated with white, black, and red polychrome slip. The male figure is depicted in a seated posture with a tall, pointed black headdress. The facial features include red bands around the eyes, circular black marks on the cheeks representing labrets, and a multi-strand white fibre necklace. The torso and limbs are decorated with black and red geometric patterns, and red yarn tassels are tied around the lower legs. The female figure features long black hair draped over the shoulders and back. She has facial markings similar to the male and a black and white fibre necklace over a geometric collar design. The body decoration is linear with red accents, and red yarn tassels are tied to the shins. These figures are recognised as Brazilian Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Condition report:
A chip is visible at the pointed tip of the male figure headdress, exposing the ceramic body (photo 4). General surface wear and scuffing are present on both figures. The black slip on the female figure hair shows areas of surface crazing and flaking (photo 2). There is surface wear and ingrained dust in the recessed areas. The fibre necklaces and yarn tassels show fraying (photo 1).
