Lot 20:
Description
This lot comprises a nine-drawer collector’s chest constructed from stained softwood with black-painted wooden dividers. The chest is arranged in a three-by-three drawer layout, featuring a hand-painted circular motif across the facade. This central design includes a chequerboard pattern in black and white, surrounded by textured red, white, and yellow dots on a dark blue ground. The corners and margins are decorated with floral and foliate scrolls in red, green, and yellow against a cream-coloured ground. Each drawer is fitted with a patinated metal ring pull on a flower-shaped backplate and slides on wooden runners.
Width 80cm
Depth 30.5cm
Height 80cm.
Condition report:
The chest exhibits significant wood loss and splintering to the lower right-hand front corner, exposing the unstained wood grain beneath the finish (photo 6). The top surface shows several long scratches, a curved surface mark, and general scuffing to the edges (photo 1). General wear and minor paint loss are visible on the black-painted dividers and the edges of the drawer fronts (photo 4 and photo 5). The drawer interiors show natural variations in the wood and some staining from use (photo 1).
