Description
A Victorian iron-bound pine plate chest of rectangular form. The chest is constructed from wide pine planks with heavy iron strapping, corner brackets, and base protectors secured with heavy nails. It features a flat-top hinged lid and heavy iron drop handles at either end. A central iron escutcheon in a lozenge shape is fitted to the front, although no key is present. The interior is fitted with two long internal iron strap hinges. A faint stencilled mark reading NH is visible on the right-hand side of the exterior. A paper manufacturer’s label is pasted to the underside of the lid, featuring illustrations of two trunks and printed text reading H. BRYANT, TRUNK, PORTMANTEAU & PLATE CHEST Manufacturer. 1, CONNAUGHT TERRACE, 1, EDGWARE ROAD. Trunks repaired or taken in exchange Indian Orders promptly executed.
