Description
A carton containing an assortment of hand-carved soapstone decorative goods, traditionally known as Kisii stone, produced in Kenya. The lot includes large circular platters featuring hand-incised decoration; one is designed with a central leaf motif within geometric quadrants, while another displays a dense repeating spiral pattern. The collection also comprises tall stylized female figures with incised spiral patterns on black-dyed surfaces and small vessels including cups with varied geometric designs. Figurative carvings are present, featuring two Mother and Child sculptures in polished natural brown and green soapstone. Additional items include curved bookend components in cream and black finishes, alongside a group of roughly shaped and unworked dark green soapstone pieces. The undersides of the larger items bear a hand-incised inscription reading SPECIALLY HAND MADE IN KENYA FOR BESMO. Several pieces also retain a rectangular black and silver foil adhesive label with a stylized B logo and the word Besmo.
