Description
This lot comprises a graduated pair of vintage wicker and rattan armchairs, commonly referred to as peacock or Emmanuelle chairs. The pair consists of one adult-sized chair and one smaller child-sized chair. Both are constructed from woven rattan and wicker in a natural honey-coloured tone, accented with contrasting dark-stained weaving along the frames and decorative edges. The design features a characteristically high, flared, fan-shaped backrest with an intricate openwork diamond lattice pattern. Each chair has a circular seat with a radiating sunburst weave, supported by a flared, conical pedestal base that mirrors the patterns of the backrest. The curved armrests transition into the large back structures. There are no maker’s marks, labels, or stamps visible on either item.
Condition report:
The chairs are in good condition overall but show signs of age-appropriate wear. There are several minor breaks and losses to the thin wicker strands, particularly along the outer decorative edges and around the base of the larger chair. The dark-stained accents show some fading and occasional loss. Surface dust is present throughout the intricate weave. Both structures appear stable.
