Lot 8:
Description
This collection comprises a variety of 20th-century historical printed materials and a mid-century landscape painting. The newspapers include a copy of The Daily Mirror dated Thursday, 24 August 1922, featuring the headline GEN. MICHAEL COLLINS SHOT DEAD, and a Late Special edition of The Evening News from October 1953. The books include a cloth-bound Everyman’s Library edition of Christmas Stories by Charles Dickens, edited by Ernest Rhys with an introduction by G.K. Chesterton, and The Scottish Clans & Their Tartans by W. & A. K. Johnston, Ltd. Other printed items consist of an illustrated edition of The Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám (Mitre Press), a Bartholomew’s Revised Half-Inch Contoured Map of Surrey, and an instructional pamphlet from The Modern Car Easy Guide Series. Technical documentation includes service manuals for EMI Service Ltd, His Master’s Voice, and Marconiphone equipment, notably a 1934 manual for the model 288 automatic record-changing mechanism. Two cigarette card albums are present: An Album of Motor Cars by John Player & Sons and a Wills’s Cigarette Picture-Card Album containing various cards from series such as treasures of Ancient Taxila. The fine art component is an oil on board coastal landscape, signed M. THORNER to the lower left, housed in an ornate gilt wood and composition frame with a laurel leaf pattern. A small wooden souvenir plaque is also included.
Condition report:
The items show varying degrees of age-related wear. The 1922 newspaper exhibits significant toning, foxing, and brittle edges with small tears and creases. The 1953 newspaper is folded with moderate browning. The Scottish Clans volume has significant wear to the spine and corners with slightly bowed boards. Other books and softcover pamphlets show general handling wear and minor creasing. Service manuals feature punch holes and light foxing. Cigarette card albums have moderate handling wear and foxing to the covers. The oil painting appears stable with visible impasto; the frame shows minor cracking and gilt loss consistent with age.
