Lot 50:
Description
A 20th-century reproduction pedestal filing chest in the Georgian taste. The exterior is finished in mahogany veneers, with the drawer fronts featuring flame mahogany patterns. The chest is configured as two deep filing drawers, designed with faux drawer fronts to resemble a four-drawer bachelor’s chest. The top is inset with an antiqued tan leather writing surface, decorated with a gilt-tooled Greek key border. Each side features inset panels with decorative shaped-corner moulding. The piece is fitted with cast brass swan-neck handles on shaped batwing backplates. The drawers are mounted on modern metal extension slides and are fitted with internal rails to accommodate standard suspension files. Two locks are present, one to the top drawer and one to the lower section; one key is included. The chest stands on a moulded plinth with bracket feet.
Width 54 cm
Depth 61 cm
Height 77 cm.
Condition report:
The chest is in fair to good used condition. The leather top exhibits significant signs of wear, including scuffing, staining, and notable loss to the gilt-tooled border, along with residue from a previous label. The mahogany finish shows various surface scratches, minor nicks, and small chips, particularly to the edges of the top rim and the bracket feet. The internal drawer mechanisms operate smoothly.
