Description
A collection of decorative boxes including carved wood chests, a painted wood box, and a lacquered box. The carved wooden chests, possibly camphor wood, feature deep relief foliate and acanthus leaf carving to the lids and front panels, each raised on a shaped plinth base. The rectangular painted box is supported on four ebonised bun feet and decorated with scenes of figures and animals in a landscape; the interior is lined with yellow paper. The collection further includes a small domed box of lacquered papier-mâché, featuring an intricate hunting scene in the Indo-Persian style with equestrian figures and fauna against a black ground. No maker’s marks or signatures are visible on any of the pieces.
Condition report:
The collection shows varying conditions consistent with age and use. The carved wooden chests display minor surface wear and light scuffs. The rectangular painted box exhibits significant surface degradation, including extensive crackelure and paint loss across the lid and sides. The lacquered box has small chips to the lacquer at the edges and light surface scratching.
